Is this a good way of taming a budgie?

I had a tamed budgie, who then became untamed when I got a new budgie. I once tried getting them separated when they were new and fighting, so I put the cage into my small bathroom, with the (at that time) new bird, and then took my old bird to the bathroom. The new environment freaked it out, so it flew away from my finger and kept flying about, trying to find a perch. I didn't want to die of panic, so I caught him in my hand. He then stayed on my hand for a second, then when it had enough energy, started flying again, so I caught it. Would this be a good way to tame my birds, especially the new one (which I have had for about a month) I caught it gently, so it was able to wriggle out of my hand.Please help.
