Hazmat endorsement in Georgia?

My husband is a truck driver and is going to start a new job at the end of the month, and he needs his hazmat endorsement. I know he needs to go to the DDS to take the test, but is there anything else involved? He mentioned something about a 60 day waiting period for something (a background check maybe? I'm not sure.) Does anyone know anything about this?
