Tips on teaching yourself German?

Different methods suit different people. I found the BBC courses quite useful (you can borrow books and CDs from the library - the ociated TV programmes go out in the middle of the night on BBC2). I find that when I'm in Germany or Austria, the locals insist on speaking to me in English. I don't know whether that's because my German is so awful or because they want to practise their language skills.
