Is being in a wheelchair like the Shawshank Redemption?

If given the chance to walk again, would you take it? After a while do you become dependent on your wheelchair, and the limitations it brings, like the prisoners did for the walls of the prison in Shawshank? Does the thought of walking again bring a little bit of fear?
